help for hook up for surround from TV

I am looking to hook up my satellite system to my surround sound system so when I am watching I get surround sound. My satellite box does not have a HDMI.It has a digital audio out and regular coax cable.I hooked up the digital audio to my system but wasn't receiving any surround sound. I have a 5 disc DVD player surround sound receiver from sony dream system.Any help would be great. Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks

Hi Rich,

Maybe you could post us a link to your system to help us figure out what you can do. Many all-in-one systems don’t have provisions for connecting extra equipment.

Regards,
Wayne A. Pflughaupt

Re: help for hook up for surround from TV

A couple things without knowing more information. Please forgive me if you have already gone throught the following steps, but start with the basics.

The audio setup of the satellite receiver has to be set to Dolby Digital On and not just Stereo/Standard/Off. Depending on which receiver/system you have the steps to get to the audio subsystem may be a bit differenct.

Not all Satellite stations/movies actually output Surround Sound so you have to be tuned to a program that is sending the correct signal. The most common reason for not getting Surround Sound is that the program isn't being sent that way so your receiver will just put out regular Digital Stereo/Mono.

Your system has to use the sat digital on the appropriate input. You need to use the proper Digital In # that corresponds to the same Video In #. Some receivers default to digital Audio when it is connected, others must be told to use the Digital instead of the analog. If you have both Optical and Dig Coax, try changing the outputs to make sure that you don't have a bad input/output/cable.

The receiver must be set to Surround Sound or Auto and not Stereo.

Does the receiver tell you if it is receiving a digital/analog signal?
Which specific system do you have?

Re: help for hook up for surround from TV

Thanks for the help guys.I have the Sony DAVFX10.I know I don't have a lot of adjustments with this system. When I hook up the digital audio it sounds very good on the front and center speaker but I don't get anything on the rears.what setting do you think I should use on my receiver?I have an A.F.D I think which with a DVD movie it automatically adjusts to the DVD how it was made to sound with surround sound.Do you think that setting just works with DVD's?I have the digital audio out with and R that isn't hooked up.I just have 1 cable hooked up from out of satellite box to in on receiver that also has a L R in.Do I need to hook them up also.Do you know of any good satellite channels that have surround sound movies on them? Thanks again for the input you might have. This is all new to me.

Re: help for hook up for surround from TV

1. On your sat receiver you have to go into the settings and turn ON Dolby Digital (or some other surround setting)
2. Even with that on, if the channel doesn't use a surround mix, and you use AFD on your receiver you will get 2-channel
3. Most of the pay channels, like HBO will use a surround. As do most of the HD channels.

Re: help for hook up for surround from TV

OK, looking at the manual fr the FX10, it look like you should have at a minimum the Sat Video out Yellow (composite) cable and whatever the Digital Out of the Satellite receiver connected to the Sony.

Depending on your Sat Receiver, you should use Video 1 if you have a Digital Coax or Video 2 if you are using the Optical/Toslink Digital connector.

Make sure the Dolby Digital is turned on in the Sat Setup menu.

Your Sony Sound Field/Surround Sound selector probably should be on A.F.D. (should automatically detect and decode DD signals when present and output the appropriate signal to the speakers).

Tune to a channel and see what sound you get. The sat info screen should tell you if the audio is being sent in DD though not all DD has to have active rear speakers. Best bet would be HBO/Showtime or one of the High Def channels. I was suprised that the PPV Movies I checked during the 5 minute preview didn't seem to putting out DD sound.

If you still aren't getting 5.1 sound, then check your speaker calibrations though if they are OK for your DVDs I assume those don't change for other inputs. Cycle through your Sound Field settings and see if the speakers are at least working. It looks like the Dream System has a few artificial Sound Effect setting that either make all 5 speakers identical or even one where it outputs sound only from the rear speakers -- at least that should tell you that the system is sending signals to all the speakers.

If you still are only getting sound from the front 3 speakers then something is either wrong with your setup or the DD decoder.
