Upconveting Sony DVD Player

Folk's,
I'm green when it comes to this stuff.
So..........My tv is a 04' Sony70" xbr and I'm in the market for a new DVD player. I'm looking at a Sony product that upconverts to 1080i and 720p(?). Will there be a marked improvement from my old 480p dvd player. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Re: Upconveting Sony DVD Player

Hi Edvardis - Seeing as the video processor in your new XBR is very good, you'll likely get a better picture by keeping your existing Progressive Scan DVD Player and letting your TV do the video scaling, as opposed to purchasing a budget Upconverting DVD Player and letting the player do the scaling.

That being said, what model DVD player do you currently own and what model are you looking at?

Try it, but I don't think you'll see a big difference. Go buy the Sony 75 at your local store. It's a good budget upconverter over HDMI.

My Sony TV upconverts so well on it's own that I don't see a big difference between $70 and $400 players.

Same with my JVC TV. My Sony DVD player upconverts over HDMI and I can't tell the difference between the HDMI (Sony upconversion) and component (JVC upconversion) when playing the same disc. I've connected other players with the same result.

Regards,

Joe

Re: Upconveting Sony DVD Player

I have the Sony DVP-NS75H and two HD displays I have used it with, a Sony KV-30XBR910 30" CRT and Panasonic PT-L500U 720p LCD projector. I think it is a very good budget player and upscaling provides a tiny improvement with the CRT and more noticeable improvement with the projector. There is some benefit to having the player scale rather than the display. I have several other inexpensive upscaling players with similar results. I have never tried an expensive upscaling player to see if the benefit improves relative to the price, but I am very skeptical. I am a big fan of upscaling DVD but don't claim the difference is great, just worthwhile.

Re: Upconveting Sony DVD Player

Thanks everybody for all the input. I'm in the market because my Samsung is freezing up on me. For the relative low cost of the Sony unit which upscales, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one of them and stay within the brand of my TV. Any last thought on which Sony to go with?
Thanks again....Ed
