What a way to start off

I really hate to start things off this way, being my first post and all, but evidently I'm a little slower than I thought I was. I recently made the decision to go to Digital cable after putting it off for so long. The main reason is I broke down and purchased a new TV and since it is HD I figured I better step up a little. I guess I too old school for the new technology, but all this wiring is over my head.
OKAY, here is what I have:
Cable box = Motorola DCT3416 I
TV = Toshiba LCD
DVD recorder = Toshiba
Tuner/Amp = Onkyo TXSRO2

I have had the amp for a while so the speaker wiring has been done.
For the life of me, I can't figure the best way to connect all of this together. Currently I have the TV and surround sound working, but I didn't have a clue about connecting the DVD player. I am fairly sure that what I have done is probably wrong. I have several component cables that I can use, or am I better off going with S-video cable?

I want to thank anybody that has enough patients in advance!!

Re: What a way to start off

You posted this in HT Software - TV Shows, which is not the place to get hardware assistance. I'll move it to Audio/Video Sources, since it's primarily about connecting a DVD player/recorder.

Re: What a way to start off

Hi Don

The component cable is way better to use and just connect it from the DVD to the TV.

Like I said, I'm a little slow. Do I go from box, to DVD, to AMP, to TV?

Re: What a way to start off

don't know what inputs/outputs you have, but in general:

for the cable and DVD: DVI or HDMI to the HDMI input on your TV. Or Component to Component as the back-up plan. This is for video.

for audio run optical or coax from each to the receiver. the back-up plan is 2-ch RCA (red / white).

use the receiver to switch audio, use the source button on TV remote to switch video. turn off speakers on your tv.

use monoprice.com for any cables you don't have.

Re: What a way to start off

Like I keep saying, I'm really ignorant here. Here is what I have:

Cable BOX:
RF in & out (Coax wire)
S-Video
SPDIF - orange
Video - Yellow
Audio - Yellow
Audio - L - White
Audio - R - red
Y - green
Pb - blue
Pr - red
HDMI
USB
Ethernet
Sata

DVD player / recorder:
Cable in & out
S-Video - in
S-Video - out
Component Video Output
Y-Green
PB/CB - blue
PR/CR - red
Video out - yellow
L=White
R=Red
Digital Audio Output
PCM / Bitstream
Coaxial (RCA) - Black

TV:
Video-1 In
S-video
Video - Yellow
L/Mono - white
R-Red

ColorStream HD-1
Y-Green
PB-Blue
PR-Red
Audio Left-white, Right-red
ANT-coax
HDMI-in
Digital Audio Out

Onkyo Amp
Component Video
Video 1-2-3 IN
Green
Blue
Red

DVD IN
Green
Blue
Red

OUT
Green
Blue
Red

Digital In Coax (RCA)

Video 2
IN-yellow
S-Video

I hate to sound like a real dumb@##, but I just don't understand this stuff. If I need to go pick up some more or differant cables I can. I just have a pretty good investment here and would like for it to sound and look the best it can. Usually my son does this for us, but as an ET in the USCG I guess it comes a little easier. But, with him in California and us here, that isn't an option.
THANKS AGAIN

Re: What a way to start off

Here is one way:
Cable Box:
HDMI connect to TVs HDMI
Audio L/R to Onkyo's Audio L/R Input

DVD:
Component video output to TVs Colorstream HD-1
Coax output to Onkyo's Coax input

Unfortunately your Onkyo does not do HDMI switching. Also, it only has one coax audio input and does not have an optical (SPDIF) for your HD box. So you are not passing Dolby Digital from the HD box to your receiver, you only pass 2 channel and you will need to use a surround mode on the Onkyo.

Re: What a way to start off

Does this make sence?

With a coax wire (RCA ends) ran from the DVD to the Onkyo, I get DVD sound, but I had to disconnect it to be able to get TV sound.

Hi Don

I am not an expert, if you want to watch tv today just disconnect it and when you want to watch dvd reconnect it...someone with more knowledge will show up to give you a better answer.
