Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

Just wondering what calibration disc is best for projectors. I have an old copy of VE and using that to set Contrast seems to apply to CRTs. It has you raising the contrast control untill there is distortion of a vertical line, then lower untill it stops. I could never get it to bend.

Are there discs out there that are more for PJs and LCD displays?

Also, most may know this but I started feeding the M1 port with a DVI from my HD cable box and the switching (SD to HD and back ) is greatly improved and the pic looks a bit better too.

Re: Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

I use the THX Optimizer to set contrast on my projector. For everything else I use the Sound and Vision calibration disc.

Re: Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

I can't believe it but of my 60 or so DVDs.. no THX. I think my Daughter has Finding Nemo so I can use that. How is the contrast set using THX? I assume it's different than what VE has.

Thanks

Re: Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

nah, it's basically the same pluge pattern, though I've read that the colors are incorrect on the THX CDs and you shouldn't use them.

Just go get DVE. The menu is a pain, but if you already know what you are doing you can just skip to the test patterns.

Re: Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

Well, not much point in using VE for setting contrast using their method. May as well set it by sight. Apparently only a CRT display would cause the vertical line to bloom or bend, which is what they tell you to look for.

Must be a way to set contrast for PJs and other Displays that aren't CRT based.

I use the THX Optimizer on that very disc. I've found that it works for about 90% of the DVDs out there!

Re: Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

Here's one recommendation:
Quote:
DVE is a little hard to navigate, but I usually just jump straight to the test patterns.

To calibrate BTB, I use the pattern found on Title 12, Chapter 13.
You want to set your Brightness (aka black level) so that the outermost black bars will blend in with the background. On the 4805, I would recommend getting as close the screen as you can and lower the brightness until the black bars are completely indistinguishable from the background. It should also be the point where dithering (dancing pixels) should disappear. Some dvd players are not capable of showing the outermost black bars, in this case, lower brightness until the dithering disappears as mentioned earlier.

To calibrate WTW, I use the pattern found on TItle 12, Chapter 14.
Looking at the 3 dots in the bottom right corner of the pattern, you want to increase the Contrast (aka white level) so that the white bar above the 3 dots blends in with the white bar next to it. Lower your contrast so that you can distinguish the bars from each other and increase contrast until the bars blend in together.
http://japhule.collinsreport.com/4805FAQ/html/

I have also been told to use the SMPTE RP 133 test pattern (DVE Title 13 Chapter 2), specifically looking at the white box with the less white patch in the middle of it (bottom right). Adjust contrast until the two blend together.

Re: Infocus 4805 Calibration Question

OK, I'll give that a try. I did the BTB. Need to check the WTW.

As you said, VE navigation is a pain.

Thanks
