Need help with buying new dvd player

I would like to get a new dvd player as my old one just died and I have a few questions. My first question is whether or not I can get surround sound using a hdmi cable with my current setup and if so is it worth it. My receiver doesn't have a hdmi input, but the dvd players I'm looking at have it and my tv has a dvi input. So to me it seems like since my receiver doesn't have a hdmi input I would only be able to get sound through my tv. My second question is which dvd player would be a better choice. I am currently looking at the Onkyo 404 and the Denon 575. If there are any others worth mentioning please let me know. I would prefer it to be black for matching reasons. My last question is should I even bother with the upconverting or should I spend my money elsewhere. Thanks alot for any help.

Re: Need help with buying new dvd player

Since your receiver doesn't have HDMI, you can run the HDMI straight to the tv, and run digital coax or optical (whichever the dvd player has), to the receiver, for surround audio. Doing it that way, yes, you can get surround with what you have.

As far as upconverting, that's totally up to you. If you think you'll get an HD DVD or Blu ray DVD player, anytime in the near future, you may want to hold off on the upconverting player. If not, you may want to get one, for the best possible video.

Denon makes very good stuff. I think Onkyo does too, but I have no experience with them. Oppo makes a very good upconverting player, that's priced right. They have a new black one with HDMI. You'd have to hook it up like I said above. It also plays dvd-a and sacd 5.1 surround music discs.
Good luck with whatever you get!
