Video Upconverter Question?

I have a widescreen HD tv that I bought about 2 years ago. It does not appear to support 780P. I am kind of a video game guy and plan on getting the new xbox360 that outputs all games at 780p and some at 1080i. Is there something I can get to upconvert the 780p to 1080i so i can enjoy the 780 resolutions? Also is there going to be any loss of quality? (my tv supports 480p, 1080i)

You probably mean 720p, and any HD set sold in the U.S. ought to accept this via a component connexion. It will generally be rescaled to 1080i by the TV itself.

Well I must have bought the one tv that does not do this. :-( Its a Mitsubishi that I bought from best buy. I don't have the exact model right now. I know it does not because my current xbox was displaying this resolution and my tv just was going crazy. (and yes I do mean 720p my mistake) So I was wondering if there was an extra box or something that I could get to display the 720p in 1080i and it would look the same as if my tv did use 720p. (besides going from progressive to interlaced of course)

Many newer sets will as Chris states generally accept it but upscale it to 1080i. Many older sets however did not accept it at all though, as your Mits does not appear to. Another example of this are the Pioneer SD 533 and SD643 HD sets, they will not accept it at all. As with yours, if you try to give them a 720p image, the image goes nuts. In this case, possibly an external scaler might help, such as some of the Iscan scalers may be able to, but it won't be cheap. I would suggest looking to see if the Iscan HD can do this for you. Again though if it can, the HD's are rather expensive.

Wow your right, just a quick look around for some prices I come up with 500 being the lowest for a used unit on eBay. Dang what a disappointment. It is going to drive me nuts not being able to have the best output-ed resolution from these new games. Thanks for your help, looks like I will try and sell my tv and get a new one. (going to loose my A$$ is this deal)

Are you sure your new Xbox does not have a selection to output all games as 1080i?

Actually there are still lots of HDTV sets out there that do not accept 720p! Only 480i, 480p, and 1080i.

Furthermore most CRT HDTV's display only in 1080i and they convert all other acceptable inputs to 1080i.
