I received a letter from Pioneer yesterday that concerns litigation in California where the plantiff alledged that Pioneer DVD players are not compatible with the DVD video standard. Therefore, Pioneer players cannot play all DVD video discs.

As part of the court order, this letter is sent out to all Pioneer DVD player owners who had contacted Pioneer customer service in the past with complaints. The letter asks if the Pioneer owner wants to disclose Pioneer DVD player owner's contact information to the Plantiff's counsel. But Pioneer says they discarded all names, address and contact info, so the letter asks if the owner is willing to disclose the information.

I guess Pioneer was nice enough to exercise privacy rights of it's customers. I suppose if an owenr were to release the contact info, it means the Plantiff's councel will contact owners for gathering evidence or other info for their arguments against Pioneer.

Anyone recieve this letter? I'm inclined to let it go, seems frivilous. Any thoughts? Apologies for the long winded explaination.

Thanks, Nelson

Not from Pio (yet), but there was a similar letter I got last year regarding Toshiba. I may have even posted on the subject.

I own a Tosh (portable), as well as a Pio, but since I have had no problems with either, I did toss the Tosh letter, and will toss the Pio letter, should I get one.

Thanks Brian. Sounds like many frivilous suits out there towards the DVD player manufacturers. I had a firmware upgrade years ago and my player was happy again.

Just keep in mind. Class Action Suits do nothing but make the winning lawyers a ton of money.

Nothing good ever comes out of them for any of the consumers. Ok, rarely does good ever come out of it for the consumer.

I accidentally became part of a class action suit concerning Iomega's zip disc drive a while ago. Something about the drives dying prematurely and the "clicking of death" or something. Anyway, know what the settlement was? You were "allowed" to buy $50 worth of "discounted" Zip disks from a particular vendor they chose. The funny part? You could get them cheaper on your own. I wrote a nasty letter to the lawyers essentially calling them crooks, and what a bogus deal the settlement was. They actually had the gaul to write me back and actually try to justify why the settlement was good for consumers. Crooks, I say!

If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.
