How digital sound is converted and transfered?

Hello,

I have an Integra DTR-5.5 receiver. It is a nice receiver with mulitple optical and coxial digital inputs as well as 7.1 surround sound and 192/24bit powerful digital-to-analog converters builtin.

What I am wondering is when digital sound is transfered from my dvd player or cable box to the receiver, is the receiver or the dvd/cable box doing the processing of the sobly digital?

Like some dvd players have the dobly digital and dts and all the rest of the encoders built in. Do I need that since apparently my receiver has that too?

What is PCM?

Thank you,
Kyle Leissner

PCM = Pulse Code Modulation, and it stereo only, though a 5.1 DTS stream can be encoded to pass via PCM. If you do a search on PCM, I believe you will find that answer.

Digital signal is not yet processed, it is passed basically straight from the disc as a "bitstream", which is then decoded by your receiver.

It is typically better to let your receiver do the decoding, as most receivers have better bass management than the average player.
