Here's a paper comparison. The 3910 will have a better deinterlacer, will have a better layer change delay (essentially none), and will have better bass management for SACD & DVD-A than the 59AVi. The 3910 also has seemingly better build quality (18.7 vs 12.1 lbs). I also think I saw somewhere that the 3910 has better DACs too (both Burr Browns, but different model numbers). But who knows how all of that will end up in a real world audio and video comparison? But I suspect I know...

Switch that. The 59avi uses TI's (BB) best DACs. That statement is per Gordon Mcgreggor (DAC master). To back that up, all audio comaprisons [that I have read] between the 59avi and the 5900 have the Pioneer comming out on top. The 3910 will not be any better than the 5900 (audio-wise).

In that review between the 3910, Marantz 9500, and the Onkyo SP-1000, the Denon came in last (but is was close to the Marantz).

Most of the audio comparisons I have seen between the 59AVi and the 5900 yield the 5900 as the winner.

Just one is: The Perfect Vision, Sept/Oct 2004.

Here's what I dug up on the two DACs for the 59AVi and 3910 from Burr Brown's web site:

59AVi DACs PCM1738 117dB DR, THD+N 0.0004%, 8x Oversampling Dig Filter: Stopband Atten: –82dB, Start Price (1KU) ($) 5.25

3910 DACs PCM1796 123dB DR, THD+N: 0.0005%, 8× Oversampling Dig Filter: Stopband Atten: –98 dB, Start Price (1KU) ($) 6.5

Seem pretty equivalent to me, in fact, both the dynamic range and digital filter stopband attenuation numbers of the 3910's DACs are better. And it seems unlikely that TI would charge *more* for a worse performing DAC. So ... maybe the 59AVi's DACs were TI/BB's best when they came out (the PDF document is dated 01 Feb 2002 on TI's web site), but the 3910's certainly are state of the art now (PDF doc date 17 Dec 2003)

And obviously, in addition to the DACs, it's also the power supplies, op amps, anti-liasing filters, etc, that matter. Gordon also says this: implementation is king, and for example, he's already said that he prefers the implementation the 5900 has for SACD BM:

Quote:
Though one point is very important. DVD-5900 has DSD->PCM converter SM5819A, and in the case of bass management for DSD this converter will be used, after my experiments I know that such way is better (I can ABX the difference in my system for such path with 19/19 probability http://www.digit-life.com/articles2...vd-a/index.html ) then using of analog filters in PCM1738 or PCM1790 for SACD signal decoding, therefore DVD-5900 logically should sound better in this mode for SACD then 59AVi ...

The 3910 has the same BM the 5900 has.

Kevin

Re-read that entire post from Gordon (not just the short part you quoted). He stills gives the nod to the Pioneer.

Last month, two british magazines (independantly) compared hi-end universals. The 59 beat out the 5900 both times (see my post below Gordon's post for more details).

A french reviewer did review the new Marantz 9500, the Pio 858avi (59avi) and the Denon 3910.

http://www.hifissimo.com/store/loadp...ntzdv9500.html

The conclusion was that the 3910 is superior to the 59avi both in PQ and SQ. The reviewer left with a 3910 under the arm to replace his 59avi... He said the 59avi was the best on the market in his mind... before seeing the 3910...

For SQ, he said the 59avi is sounding flat and is not transparent at all compared to the 3910 and the Marantz.

For PQ, it was like "a veil" on the image was removed when switching from the 59avi to the 3910.

For them, it was clear that the 3910 was superior in every way to the 59avi...

If you go to the AVS forums, there's at least one or two threads that are pretty comprehensive. Thus far, the 3910 is coming out as the king in that consensus of opinion.
