I have a 53 inch Panny RPTV with HDMI 1080i input. The S97 I have has macroblocking like a SOB.

Im wanting to know if I should move over to the Sony 975?

Has anyone heard good or bad about the Sony 1080i into a RPTV?

What will the problems be with this setup? Any "green push" or CUE problems? What can I expect with my setup?

I am asking for all your replies as I've got to make the return soon if I do decide...

I just got the LG LST-3510A (HDTV receiver + DVD player with upscaled DVI and RGB outputs).
I have set it up to RGB output at 720p and connected a 15pin VGA to 5 x BNC cable to the RGBHV input of my CRT projector.

It works fine for SD/HD DTV over-the-air, but it won't play a commercial DVD on the RGB output (it says to use the component out at 480i/p instead).
I works only with "non-commercial" DVDs.

Does anyone know if there is a way around this?
(like the region free firmware on CD)

Does anyone who has the Momitsu 880 know if the DVI-I to VGA adapter allows DVD playback at 720p via VGA?
I've heard that the Momitsu can do NTSC/PAL and any region.
Did anyone test this?

I have a modified SONY DVP-S7700 with the Cinematrix PSM1 board installed inside, that outputs 720p on RGBHV BNC, but I was interested in getting the HDTV receiver in the same box.

If anybody shows you a small computer image comparing standard DVD to upconverted DVD and you see a difference, it is likely either because the image was doctored or one of the DVD players was substandard. The difference between upconverted DVD and standard DVD using properly working DVD players isn't great enough to be represented by an online digital photo in my opinion. I have a DVD318 that I prefer with my Panasonic PT-L500U LCD projector over my standard DVD player. With my direct view XBR910, I prefer 480p. The difference isn't great in any case.

Ted,

I think the Toshiba SD-5970 is a wretched player:

Others have reported differently.

Mike,

I don't have a Sony LCD direct view only a Panasonic LCD direct view. Via the HDMI connection at 1080i, I think the Sony DVD-NS975V is an excellent player that should satisfy most critical viewing. It has a bit of Chroma Upsampling Error and a tendency for somewhat reduced green output when coupled with certain television sets (it doesn't affect the picture as much as one might think). If one does not see or have an issue with "macroblocking" then the Panasonic is an excellent choice as well. The Panasonic, in my view, has outstanding detail and color. There are only good choices here, IMHO. The *best* choice is left to the purchaser.

Best regards,

Paul Bigelow

Paul,

I just purchased the Panasonic S97 to use with my Marantz DLP HD2+ Projector. Here's my newbie question- the DLP projector uses Faroudja DCDiŽ video processing. Do I let this 14,000 dollar projector utilize the faroudja processing? Or do I turn it off and let the panasonic s97 use its faroudja? Is there an option to turn off the faroudja on the dvd player? Hope you can help and thank you!

Peter,

From my understanding from AVS forum readings, etc, it's normally better to let the DVD player do it.

Here's some simple kind of logic to explain it...the DVD player gets to work directly from the digital video data from the disc...whereas the projector is doing its processing based on the video that is being pumped into it.

I'm not going to hypothesize with regards to a super-expensive pj, but I would assume the same rule of thumb would hold here.

Of course with DVI (assuming you are using DVI) there aren't really as many digital/analog conversions...so perhaps the DVD player advantage is less there than it was formerly.
