TiVo questions...

Can any Series 1 TiVo function without being "activated" or paying a monthly subscription?
Is there a list somewhere of the TiVo uits that will work without a subscription?
When using a TiVo that isn't "activated" or part of a subscription, do you record just like you would with a VCR (set record time by date and time)?
Do you type in a name to each show you record so you can access it later?

thanks!
Jim

No. Only one that originally had version 2.5 or lower. All others need a subscription to work.

The Tivo Community will have the exact information.

Yes. And you are missing the best feature of Tivo. Set it up and forget about it.

In the Now Playing list, it will have recordings named something like "Timer Recording" with a date and time on them. Again, you are missing out by skipping the subscription.

I think that's originally shipped with "1.3" or lower ...

Might want to consider the Toshiba DVD/Tivo instead with the "Tivo Basic" free service, includes free trial to the full service so you can get an idea of what you are missing.

I should have said that I was guessing.

Check on eBay. They specifically advertise Series 1 Tivos that work without a subscription.

My Phillips HDR312 will work for manual recording without a subscription and that is with the most current Series 1 software. I'm pretty sure that most of the Series 1 Tivo's will actually work without a subscription, you just can't do anything other than a manual recording.
