Before anyone says it, this isn't a post about games
Anyway, I used to have one of the orginal Sony DVD players from back in the day, and when the Xbox came out I decided to switch to that as my main DVD player. I have it connected with component cables to my Panasonic 27" TV and optical cable to my receiver. It's always worked great, looked and sounded way better than my Sony player. Until recently.
Lately when I make the volume on my receiver pretty high, I can hear a constant repeating "clicking" sound coming the speakers. At the same volume level, it doesn't do it if I switch to my CD changer or Cable box (both using RCA connections though). At first I thought maybe the optical cable I had got messed up somehow, so I went out and blew money on a new cable and it didn't fix the problem. I tried connecting it to the other optical ports on my receiver, and had the same problem. I don't have anything else with an optical connection to try it out, but so far this receiver has been great and I really doubt the receiver itself is the problem.
Also, when I first started using my Xbox the thing I loved the most about it was it had seamless layer changes. My sony player would pause for a second or 2 when it would change layers, the Xbox always kept right on playing no matter what, but recently it's been starting to show the layer changes more. The other night while watching X2, at the layer change we waited about 10 seconds for it to happen, and when it did the screen went blocky, then black, then it came on and the rest of the movie played out fine. It didn't do that the last time I watched the disc...
So, is this an Xbox problem? Is this happening to other people? I've been thinking about getting a newer progressive scan player, but I've been holding out for the DVD recorders to come down in price .. is it worth it to invest in one now? Can anyone recomend a good player, I don't have a lot to spend, but it's looking like I'm gonna need something new before my Xbox dies on me (it's just a dvd player for me now, I hardly ever use it for games anymore...). I'd like to keep it under $200 if I can... Are there any in that price range that can play DVD audio?
