16:9 Setting on Sony DBS Receivers

I can't find my manual so hoping you guys can answer this. There is an option on all my Sony DBS receivers for setting the TV aspect ratio. What's it for? If something is letterbox I have to use the screen options on the TV to fill the screen. As far as I know Directv does not transmit any anamorphic material.

What am I missing here?

Thanks

N

It is to tell your receiver the aspect ratio of your display—it has nothing to do with what is being telecast, but rather with reproducing the signal that is being telecast.

So, if your TV is a widescreen display, set it to 16:9 and if it is not, then use the 4:3 setting.

Lew, sorry to be dense but what effect does it actually have? I tried changing it on the receiver feeding my widescreen and I can't see any difference.

At present, it has no effect, since DTV is an entirely 4:3 medium. Even movies that are in their OAR are letterboxed within a 4:3 frame.

So, I don't think it does anything yet.

Brian, that was my suspicion. Thanks for confirming.

You are correct, it does not. But their HD channels are transmitted in 16:9 format (not anamorphic).

As well, OTA, digital telecasts are transmitted in 16:9 format. This is true even when the picture appears to be in 4:3 format (such as most soaps, reality shows, news, etc.). The side bars get transmitted right along with the 4:3 picture in order to make up a 16:9 frame.

Lew, I was aware of the digital broadcast thing with the transmitted sidebars. Regardless, it has nothing to do with the setting on the receiver as far as I can see. And this aspect ratio setting is on a 6 yr-old receiver I have which way pre-dates HD.

Still looks like a redundant setting to me.

Ahhh, forgot about the HD boxes out there. So, in those cases, it would matter.

I assumed (incorrectly) that you were referencing a current Sony STB. I have no clue as to a 6-year old box.

On a 6 year old box, it does nothing.

Just to clarify -- about five or six years ago there was an anamorphic pay-per-view transmission of Apocalypse Now and that's when the setting would've had an effect. AFAIK it's the only time when an anamorphic DirecTV broadcast took place.
