Tivo to DVD recorder tranfer ?
How is the quality?

Note, too, that recording first to TiVo and then to DVD involves two (2) successive MPEG encodings of the video, with some additional loss of quality each time.
That's the attraction of the new Pioneer combo units that include TiVo as well as DVD recording and playback. A TiVo recording can be transferred directly to DVD, without further encoding or loss of quality. You can achieve the same result with the DVD recorders that include a hard disk, but the Pioneer units give you all the ease-of-use provided by the TiVo software.

I have the Hughs Direct TV Tivo. I wasn't sure I would need to save anything. But rather then hook up a VCR I would rather record on DVD.

Norm,
The directivo uses the same signal that is sent via the satellite so there is no additional degredation of signal when going to a DVD recorder. Also, the pioneer combo unit certainly sounds nice, but I have read many threads regarding the picture quality of the final product and they weren't very good.

Thanks for the links. Very disappointing reports. Maybe the next generation will be better.
I do feel better about having bought a separate Series 2 and DVD recorder, though.

I too really find the quality of recordings from my Directivo to my DVDR 75 recorder to be outstanding. I copied Harry Potter 2 off of HBO to watch (didn't want to buy the actual disc) and the 3 hour recording mode I used looked damn good I must say when I watched it on my 35" TV.

I record History Channel stuff on DirecTivo to Panasonic DVD=RAM for editing, then copy again to DVD-R and I'm happy with the result.
