Dispel my confusion, please

Audio CD played on a DVD player hooked up to a receiver. Does the DVD player "color" the sound at all, or is the receiver the only thing doing that? Do they both add something to the mix?

i.e, All other things being equal (same speakers, same receiver, etc), does the DVD player make any difference when playing an audio CD?

All other things being somewhat equal (transport, laser, cables etc) and depending on the quality of the system, the DAC's would have the greatest effect on sound. If you are connecting to the receiver using the analog outputs on the DVD player you would be using the DVD players digital to analog converters (DAC's)so it could definitely affect the sound. But generally speaking, if you are using the digital outputs on the DVD player, it probably isn't affecting the sound to a significant degree because you are using the receiver's DAC's. The receiver comes into play in most cases also because it will generally be doing some analog/digital conversions of it's own. About the only time the receiver isn't messing with the signal too much is if you are listening in stereo direct mode, and the DVD player is connected via the analog outputs.
