5.1 on a Mac...what's the easiest way?

Since my Mac Pro has optical audio input and output, I'm wondering how one would go about playing back 5.1 sound on it without a mixdown.

Any ideas?

Something like these? 828s are popular

MOTU.com - FireWire/USB2 Audio

Interface line outs to receiver/amp or powered speakers.

I dont undersand the question cause I dont have a mac pro, but if its anything like what the macbook does, all you need is this:

For only $0.54 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Toslink Female to Toslink Mini Male Adapter | Toslink Adapter

For DVDs? Or in general?

In DVD Player, open up preferences. Select Disc Setup. Select the Audio menu. "System Sound Output" is the default, stereo mixdown. Try selecting another option-- such as '"Digital Out - Built-in Output."

(Not sure of the wording, I use a sonica for audio, not a MacPro. Naturally it's labeled Digital Out--Sonica)

In EyeTV it is labeled "Digital Out".

Hold on tightly, let go lightly.
