Puzzling network problem

I am very new to Mac networking. After about 20 years of Mac use, I only recently have used more than one connected together.

My Macs at home work perfectly. Simple wired ethernet network. Both computers are set up for file sharing, so I can basically log into one from the other and mount a HD on the desktop.

We have a small network (3 computers) at work and they previously worked this way, but for some reason, one day, the computers are no longer available from the others. It used to be, I could select the Network from the HD list, log in to another computer's HD and access its files. Now the other computers no longer show up, and I have no idea why. The network is active, since internet and printers are shared with no problem.

I know this isn't giving much info, but I have no idea what has gone wrong. File sharing is turned on with all computers.

Any ideas?

Re: Puzzling network problem

Generally the other machines will only appear in the "Shared" sidebar list if they are all on the same subnet. You should still be able to connect to them over IP if file sharing is turned on. Just find the IP address on one machine, then go to another and type COMMAND+K from the Finder to bring up the connect to server dialog box. Enter the other machine's IP, click Connect and you should get the familiar authentication screen. As an aside, when entering the other machine's IP, you can click the "+" sign to add the remote machine as a favorite. Of course, this is useful for machines with static IP addresses...not so much for machines that acquire their IP's dynamically.

Michael, that did the trick. I don't know why they disappeared from the Network menu to begin with though.

Now, is there a way to connect two computers which are not on the same ethernet network, but are both connected to broadband modems? I'm talking about two computers which are across town from each other.
