Guys I have been using linux for the past ten years , however I just purchased a new Imac and apple tv. I have over 200 dvd's that I want to rip into mp4 so I can play them over the network into apple tv, for this I will use handbrake , however I have several hundred avi files what is the best program to rip these into mp4.

Use VisualHub. Not free, but worth every penny. It's only about $23 or so.

I was a Linux user for about 10 years as well (4 years exclusively), and I felt right at home with OS X. Now, I don't use anything else. With every Apple product I buy, I like the company more. After I bought the Apple TV, there was no turning back. It's my favorite piece of technology I've ever bought.

And then when I feel so stuffed I can't eat anymore, I just use the restroom! And then I CAN eat more!

In addition to VisualHub, you might take a look at ffmpegx.

I briefly tried ffmpegx yesterday I converted 3 start trek episodes from avi to mp4 and they came out great However visual hub looks good too so I will buy a copy of it as it can do the whole house if I move them from Linux to apple.
