New MacPros out

All models have 8 core processors. No Blu-ray drives. No HDMI or new displays. Having them come out a week ahead of MacWorld is a first. Steve Jobs will be too busy making other announcements.

Re: New MacPros out

I have a client who's G4 crashed yesterday, and he decided to order a Mac Pro today (he was way over due) I think he was minutes from a 2.66 for 2249.00 at CTI (best price he could find new) and I noticed the pause at Apple. About 10 minutes after it opened with the new Pros he ordered a single quad 2.8 for about the same price. There were none in stock at the local Atlanta stores.

I'll be setting it up in a few days, so I'll give a report if anyone is interested. The 800mhz memory is a nice boost.

Re: New MacPros out

I put in my order yesterday

* Processor 065-7534 Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
* Memory 065-7176 4GB (4x1GB)
* Graphics Card 065-7537 NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
* Hard Drive Bay1 065-7189 320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
* Hard Drive Bay2 065-7195 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
* Optical Drive 065-7203 One 16x SuperDrive
* Wireless Option 065-7206 AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
* Mouse from AOS 065-7693 APPLE MIGHTY MOUSE
* Mac OS Language for AOS 065-7707 WIRED KYBRD/MAC

It came out less expensive than I thought. I configured a similar Dell and it was over $6K, the HP was over $7K!

Hey Tim, planning on giving Pixar a run for their money with that horsepower in there?

Seriously, I'm just jealous of your machine

Nice choice on the video card. Apple over charges for the drives and memory. Way cheaper on line from 3rd party, but you didn't go nuts with too much, so...

Should be a smokin box! Congrats

Actually, since you ordered the nVidia card, and chances are yours won't ship for 3-5 weeks, it may not be too late to cancel or alter your order and bring it back down to 2GB of RAM. Then go to another dealer (like macsales.com) and get probably 2x the amount of RAM for the same price. Just my thoughts.

I love Other World. Fully trick out a Mac Pro with 32GB of RAM and Apple has you paying $9100 just for the memory. OWC will charge you $3050. You could get a couple extra Mac Pros with that difference in price.

Other World is a great dealer. Zip Zoom Fly and New Egg for drives. They compete with amazing prices.

Re: New MacPros out

Sort of off topic, but I'm now glad I purchased my MBP a month ago instead of waiting to see if they were going to include a BR drive in it for January. Since the MP's didn't come with it, nor is it an option (is it?), I find it unlikely the upcoming MBP bumps will feature it either.

Ditto, also delete the 2nd drive and buy it third-party as well. You can get a 750GB drive for less than the $250 Apple is charging for the 500GB.

Re: New MacPros out

Tonight I set up my clients 2008 Mac Pro (single chip)

The box feels very much like the previous dual 3.0 I used in the office. It might be a touch faster in a few opps, but I didn't have time with CS3 or something that requires power. It has stock memory and drive.

The stock video card is weak. With Loe's many new GPU functions, there's a huge difference from my old X1900 card and Apple's OEM on the 2008 model. I doubt my client will notice. He's upping from a G4.
I'd say the BTO 2nd level card is a must for many of us who require more for Photoshop or Media apps.

Nothing has changed here. apple has always shipped standard configs with slow drives (optical and hard), and minimal video card. People who do average work will never notice. get 4-6 thousand photos going in iPhoto, and you might see it choke along.

Zero difference in the case outside and inside. Very quiet with single drive. We didn't use the new keyboard tonight, so no opinions other than it darn skinny.

One thing I noticed was Target mount. Super quick over the old 400 bus.
