Something I just noticed with my 1.1.3 upgrade....

When I delete mail off my iPhone, it also deletes it off
my mail server.

This never happened prior to 1.1.3 and I'm not happy about it
as I need the same access to those email messages when I
switch to my laptop and desktop.

Any suggestions?

Ron, you're using GMail, right?? A few months ago, GMail added IMAP capability. This is a different way to access your e-mail, and is recommended for those who are using multiple machines to access their mail. But the behavior is very different from POP (the protocol you have been using).

With 1.1.3, Apple changed the default GMail access on the iPhone from POP to IMAP. Apparently, this is also affecting existing setups (a mistake, IMHO). The following article explains it better than I can:

And here's Google's page on the subject, with pointers to detailed information on IMAP and instructions to set your phone back to POP if you wish.

Well it sort of helps. Here are the instructions....

What are they talking about?! I tap the MAIL icon from my home
screen and there is no OTHER option.

Ron, they are talking about creating a whole new account. Perhaps these instructions are for initial iPhone users that don't have any mail accounts configured. If you already have accounts, you need to go to (from the home screen) Settings/Mail/Add Account.../Other

I too think it was a mistake. It has been quite annoying. I my adjust to it and find it better, but now I find myself having to fix things. I am trying to get my Mail account to work with my revised iPhone account the way it used to.

It looks like I fixed the problem (thanks Michael)

I deleted the current GMAIL account on my iPhone.

I then created a brand new POP3 account under mail
settings using the "other" option described above.

Incoming mail: pop.gmail.com

I used my own mail server for the outgoing address.

This seems to have fixed the problem. I am receiving all my
email and can readily delete it without worrying that it is also
being deleted off of the server.

One last thing...

Damn Iphone! Whose bright idea was it to screw this up?

Its not a screw up, you are misunderstanding the fundamental POINT of IMAP versus POP3. IMAP is designed from the start to synchronize accross all devices. Now, I agree, that making all previous POP3 accounts switch to IMAP would be really confusing to people, but I dont think thats what they did, they just made the default IMAP now.

Personally, IMAP was just what I've been wanting, and I'm REALLY happy to have it both in the crappy $20 Mail application and the free google tools.

My problem is different than yours tho, I have several gmail accounts and cant seem to figure out how to let mail know when I want to stop using one and switch to another. Is that not possible?
