After a year of arguing with a very reputable PC manufacturer
about problems I was having, the President of the company made
me a very generous offer in exchange for returning my Windows
computer.
Since, at this point, I had given that troublesome PC to my
Mother, it was time to buy her a new computer.
I went out and bought her the most basic 20" iMac (2.0 ghz
and 1GB ram). She only uses the computer for web browsing
and email, so this was perfect.
This is my first experience with the new iMac and I have to tell
you, I am extremely impressed.
First, these things are a work of art! The design of this computer
is unlike anything I have seen before. The mere fact that they fit
an entire computer inside a very slim screen design is just amazing
to me.
I took this baby out of the box, had it hooked up in minutes and
was soon installing Leopard (which is still being shipped as a CD
rather than preinstalled as of this date).
I really played with this iMac for a few hours today and fell in
love with its beautiful glossy screen display. Web pages take on
an incredible amount of vibrancy. Having switched from a CRT
display to flat panel years ago, I really miss displays where colors
leap off the screen. At least from my memory, these iMac displays
really bring back the look you used to get with CRT displays.
...and another thing....
Even at the most basic 2.0ghz/1GB ram configuration, this iMac
has a lot of punch to it. Leopard is running without any lag, and
overall processing seems very quick.
BTW, have two friends at work who bought iMacs this week as
well and are raving about them! One of my co-workers was a
long-time PC user that I really had to twist his arm to go with a
Mac. He bought the 24" model with 2GB ram and loves his iMac
so much that he is touting that he will never buy a Windows PC again.
