How to make text editor "default"?

I don't like the text editor that comes with OS X.

I am using a program called Text Wrangler that I find
far more useful.

The only problem is that Text Wrangler will not open when
I click a document. I have to right click and select OPEN WITH.

Where can I go to make certain that TEXT WRANGLER becomes
the default text editor and opens every time I click a document?

Thanks!

Single-click a document you want to open with Text Wrangler.

CMD-I (or FILE > Get Info)

A dialog will open.
Click the Disclosure trianlge next to "Open With", if necessary.
Either Choose Text Wrangler from the list, or navigate and choose if necessary.
Be sure to click "Change All". That will change all documents of the file type you "got info" on to open with TextWrnagler by default... including future documents of that type.

Sounds like you're enjoying the switch, Ron.

I love my Mac more than any other computer I have
had before it.

Thanks, Scott, for the help. I'll try this when I get home
(as I am on my PC laptop right now).

Re: How to make text editor "default"?

Ron,

You may want to set TextWrangler to start up automatically when you log in. You'll notice that it's a bit slower than TextPad is, and that can get a little annoying when you want to click on a Text file and see its contents quickly without waiting for the program to load up every time.

To add it as a startup item, just go to the Apple Menu, choose System Preferences... and then pick Accounts.

From there, click on your account and choose the Login Items tab. Then click the + sign and add TextWrangler.

That way it will always be loaded every time you log in. Just make sure not to quit it when you're done looking at a file and it will be as fast as TextPad was.

With certain documents you will also see a button under the Open With (in the get info window) that says Change All. I prefer Acrobat Pro over Preview for PDFs, so that was useful for me.
