Need screen capture software for Mac

I understand Mac OS X comes with a built-in screen capture.
I forgot the function, but I think it's CTRL + one of the F keys.

I have only played around with it once and from memory,
it took only a photo of my entire screen.

I need something a little more refined....

I need a program where I can capture a specific area of
something I am working on within my desktop. Perhaps a
photo image, perhaps a portion of a webpage or just a picture
of something happening somewhere on my screen.

Windows had a great program called SNAGIT that I was
able to map out exactly what elements of my desktop I wanted
captured.

What program does this for the Mac?

Thanks in advance!

Command + Shift + 3 is the full-screen capture you are talking about.

Try pressing Command + Shift + 4, this should be what you're looking for to capture only specific regions of your screen.

Also if, by-chance, you're looking to take a screen-cap of a DVD, Apple will not allow you do it with the the MacOS X DVD Player. Instead, you'd need to play the DVD through VLC.

Hi Ron,

The program you are looking for is Grab -- it is in the Applications:Utilities folder.

Hi Ron,

If you really want the most feature-rich and easy to use screen capture utility out there, you can spring for SnapzPro X:

This is a little closer to SNAGIT in terms of the amount of control you can have, but also like SNAGIT you have to pay a little extra for it.

Ron also as a former windows user remember that unlike Windows when you do a screen grab using Cmd Shift 3 or 4 it dumps the PNG file to your desktop not to the clipboard. Took me awhile to figure that one out

Personally, I use the free utility SnapNDrag. Does all I need from a screenshot utility.

SnapzPro X kicks ass. I've been using it for years and the version that includes full motion capture has proven invaluable.

I also recommend Snapz Pro X. It will also capture Apple DVD Player output. It is the best one out there for Mac...
