Re: 2008 MLB Thread

nice to see the AL continue the streak...

on a side note, if it hadn't been for the extra innings, i wouldn't have been channel hopping to Conan O'Brien, who had Joel McHale (from The Soup) on. i'm a huge Soup fan and he wasn't listed as a guest on the guide.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread

I finished watching the game a little while ago. More than anything, I'm just pissed off. I don't live in NY anymore, and I just found out about the Mets' new "Citi Field". As if I wasn't depressed enough about the demolition of Yankee Stadium....

If my Father wasn't already dead, this would have killed him.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread

I turned it off after the 10th inning. It was already past midnight at that point. Until then, I was enjoying the game.

I was asking "how is JD Drew an All-Star?" when he came to bat, then he hit a 2-run homer.

Selig must have been sweating bullets when the game went into the 15th inning. I wonder if he has a Plan B when teams run out of pitchers again.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread

I was ready for the AL to forfeit if it had to go another inning. I think there would have been no tie. One team or the other (in this case the AL) would simply have had to bite the bullet and say we ran out of pitchers. What a tough spot for Francona with Kazmir.

Honestly, if the Rays (and by extension Kazmir) didn't want him to pitch, they should have sent someone else in his place. Same thing for Webb, of course, Let them attend and all...but say they can't play and have allow someone else the chance...just for this eventuality.

But a GREAT GAME! Very exciting baseball. All those opportunities and some awfully good pitching. Plays at the plate. Some bad calls. Lots of drama. All in all a VERY successful event. If only they had started it an hour or so earlier.

I am so blind as to what's going on in the National League...it is always fun to see those players perform.

I wonder how many living all-stars didn't make the pre-game show? Frankly, I am always hugely disappointed whenever Yaz doesn't make it to these things. He is my boyhood hero and I always enjoy seeing him taking his place among the all-time greats of the game. I was delighted (and surprised) when he took part in that all-century team event a few years ago.

I could nit-pick about a few things...but it was a fantastic night of baseball and I really enjoyed sharing it with my 18-year old son who was really excited to see the likes of Aaron, Mays, and even Rod Carew!

Wonder if Pete Rose was invited? It felt like he should have been standing with Robinson, Schmidt & Boggs at third base. Speaking of Reds, I was REALLY surprised Joe Morgan wasn't standing there with the second basemen. It takes me back to my original question about I wonder who was missing.

Really missed Bob Shepherd, too. I was really hoping he was going to be able to make this game. It was nice of Buck to get an ovation from the crowd for him during the opening line-ups.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Plan B: Coin flip.

mike, pete is never invited.

they wont invite him

he is totally, completely 100% banned from any and all baseball events that are under the control of the hall of fame and MLB.

the Hall can do what they want with pete but they aleways follow the lead of mlb.

it's a shame. pete should be allowed in the game at this point.

if only to participate in these special events.

I think that mlb should have the all star game in cincy and have a special pete
returns event that day.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread

Pete Rose deserves his fate for what he did. That said, he will always be remembered as the great player he was without being reinstated. I watched him play as both a competitor and as the player on my favorite team who was most singularly responsible for their one world series victory. (I was at the Vet when he hit number 3000 as a Red - the place went nuts for 15 minutes) The numbers won't go away. That foul ball catch out of Bob Boone's glove will not be forgotten.

I also enjoyed the All-Star game, though I'm glad I gave up on it after midnight.

The two errors by Uggla, then the rest of the team stepping up to not allow a run to score in a bases loaded nobody out situation was inspiring. Uggla's playing on a gimpy ankle, isn't he?

I loved all the bunting from the NL players. Is the bunt even practiced by AL players any more?

Re: 2008 MLB Thread

i was reading si.com and they were saying that had the game continued, JD Drew and David Wright would have pitched for their respective teams. Drew because he bugged Francona about it the most, and Wright because he was the least one picked for this team.

EDIT --> wrt Wright, i meant LAST one picked for the team
