Re: 2008 MLB Thread
Mike Hampton couldn't quite get past the bullpen mound last night to make his start vs. PIT. He landed on the DL after hurting himself during pregame warm-ups. This is just comical at this point.

You have to stay updated on the Cubs' curses. Forget the goat - Ernie Banks just cursed the team for screwing up his statue.
They've since added the missing apostrophe.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread
I wonder if Wikipedia has updated the photo for Mr. Glass in the "Unbreakable" entry with a photo of Mike Hampton. Heaven help him if he ever sneezes.

You gotta give some props to Pedro Martinez, though. He's much more durable than Mike Hampton.
Pedro actually made it into the 4th inning in his first start for the Mets before he left...with a hammy pull...for 4 to 6 weeks.
There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Rollins' great baserunning and Colume's poor fielding were the reason that run got scored.

Two losses for the Yankees in a row to the Rays...maybe Tampa is the new power team of the East!

It's good to see Zambrano is off to a good start this season.

I think the Tigers might just have the best lineup in baseball.

Whoops!
Looking at the Tigers' upcoming schedule, I think it is entirely possible they will be 10-19 around May 1. Batting IRod leadoff today was obviously not the answer, and the fans today were clearly not happy with the product the Tigers put out there.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread
A nice piece at mlb.com today about what we've "learned" so far this season...
I especially like the last couple of 'graphs:
Quote:
• Your love for the game is unconditional
More than a few folks seemed to think that baseball's winter of discontent would lead to a post-Opening Day paucity of paying customers turning the turnstiles. Hasn't quite happened, has it?
Sure, there have been a few exceptions, but attendance across the country has been strong to quite strong thus far. Why? Because of all the cool storylines you just read about. And because our love for the game and the joy of watching it played at the highest level is stronger than our disdain for whatever might ail it in any given era. The exception would be a strike or work stoppage, but the players and owners have shown that they understand this. As long as the product is available, it will be consumed.
So what have we learned? A lot. At the same time, we haven't really learned anything. That's the beauty of a season that features 162 dramas, and it's a huge part of why we pay attention to them all.
|
Personally, I've been very impressed by what I've seen from the Rays and Royals in the early going--especially Tampa Bay.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread
If the Tigers aren't careful this could get real ugly quick. They need to start hitting, and now. So far the things I have noticed a lot are not working the count, very weak first pitch swings and just a lack of heart. They aren't out of it yet, but its getting close, and who would have thought we would be saying that at this point in the season. They either need to pitch a shut out, explode for 13 runs on some team or get into a big brawl to light a fire, something has to give.

Re: 2008 MLB Thread
Well, they can wait until Friday, if you don't mind. I have to admit to being kind of amused by diagnosing "a lack of heart" (or, as the meme seems to be, that the team completely falls apart without Curtis Granderson). I firmly believe that winning creates good juju much more than good juju creates winning, and that a month from now people will remember that lots of good teams have a long losing streak in their record somewhere; the Tigers just look bad because theirs came at the start of the season.
Jay's Movie Blog - A movie-viewing diary.

Trading Post Inn - Another gender-bending soap, with different collaborators writing different points of view.

"What the hell religion are you people?" - Overheard during the Captain Marvel serial at SF/29

However, no team has ever started the season with 6 losses (let alone 7+) and won the WS. Tiger fans are obviously hoping to break that stat.
