in-dash navigation system

I want to buy an in-dash navigation system. I went to some online shops but none of them say which are in-dash and which are not.

Does anyone have a good nav system to recommend for an Infiniti FX?

Why dont you have the dealer install the factory nav system?

Not at all practical. Factory units have parts scattered all over the vehicle and require different wiring harnesses etc.

A quick check at an Infiniti OEM parts site came up with a cost of $4022.00 for just the basic parts, not including miscellaneous brackets and such. The display unit alone costs $2797, the software CD is 285, the DVD drive is 760.

I prefer not to push the subwoofers until they\'re properly run in.

I'd take a look at the Eclipse units (w. detachable Tom Tom) and Pioneer units. There are models that can pull in XM traffic reports (for a monthly fee) that might be worthwhile to you if you do a lot of driving in densely populated areas. Go to Crutchfield and see which models fit your dash opening.

I frankly prefer on-dash gps. I can take it with me when I travel, go on my boat (it has nautical also) or lend to a friend/visitor. Plus - when it is obsolete and I want to upgrade; grab, clip, place, plug - done.

Martin Luther observed that the human race is like a drunkard who falls off his horse on the left and makes up for it by falling off the next time on the right.

You can upgrade in-dash units as well. The one in my Lexus is upgradable (I had to upgrade because according to the original disc supplied with the car our new house was in a field with no connecting road).

But unless an in-dash unit came with the car, I'm not sure I'd fit one, but this is a matter of personal taste. One other advantage of on-dash units is they can also be v. useful navigating around an unfamiliar place on foot. Handy if you're on vacation and want to get out of the car and walk round a city.

Eric_L: that's why I recommended the Eclipse head unit... it has a detachable Tom Tom unit.
