Besides being a climbing great, I think Sir Edmund was a better person, a person of true honor among climbers and a great and understated humanitarian, at least among the Nepalese.

RIP.

Re: Sir Edmund Hillary has passed away

One of the most endearing things about Sir Edmund was his great tact and kindness towards Sherpa Tensing. It was known at the time that he was the first to set foot on the summit, but out of deference to his friend, he never would be drawn on the subject until after Tensing had died. And Sir E always made a point of stating that he was part of a team and always gave due credit to the native sherpas. There are a lot of climbers and explorers who were (and are) all too ready to snatch personal glory, but he wasn't one of them.
