What is it about the internet that brings out such awful feelings in people?
All the negativism, all the hate and bile, all the things most people have the decency not to say to another person to their face. All the cynicism, the hipper-than-thou, above-it-all, yet ultimately empty snark.
What about the internet gives people the perception that they can throw out all expectations of civility? It can't be just the anonymity; there has to be more than that.
I'm sorry if I don't seem clear in what I'm writing about, but I worry about the future of human relations.

I think that it is, for the most part, the anonymity factor which leads to no consequences for behaving this way.

I've never understood people and their need to not be civil when posting on a forum like this.
I think it was Ron who once wrote that the forum is like a party with a bunch of people you don't really know. Some you know better than others but for the most part it's like a room full of people you don't know. Act on the forum, as you would at that party.
"Oh Mikey do you think I even know what the hell they are talking about half the time? I dont know whether they are talking about how hard it is to be adopted or how their father never shows them love. All I do man, is I wrinkle my eyebrows, stare at their lips and somehow I turn out to be some big sweetie." - Trent Walker (Swingers - 1996)

What, make ill-advised drunken advances to the attractive women, throw up in the bathroom then try and make off with the contents of the hosts liquor cabinet?

Anonymity.
And the fact that it seems as I get older, I notice more and more distaste for the fellow man.
1. How many people correct perfect strangers on their grammar in person?
2. How many people would overhear a conversation between complete strangers and then blast them for their thoughts or views?
3. How many people would ridicule someone for their taste in movies, or their choice of car, or their home directly?
4. Who goes up to someone, in their face, and curses them for not liking what they like?
5. What adults would take a photograph of a handicapped individual, photoshop it in some "humorous" fashion, and then physically pass it out to everyone they know?
Granted, these people exist in the real world, however, there are far fewer than the internet would estimate.

Hmmm, I find the HTF pretty civil overall. Sometimes words aren't read as the writer intended....you kind of miss the nuance of personal expressions and even emocons(sp) don't help to a great degree.

Re: What is it about the internet that brings out such awful feelings in people?
I think the fact that the HTF does not allow people to be completely anonymous keeps most of us in check. When you're posting something with your name on it, you are probably tending to be careful with what you say.
The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

Even so, HTF is still not immune to some of the things I brought up. Note the fact that format war talk is heavily restricted now.
I suppose whoever said "If men were angels, no laws would be necessary" was right.
I'll never read the IMDb message boards or user comments again as long as I live.
