Spider Lovers...who's this guy?

Found this guy on the floor of my upstairs bathroom. Most spiders I see in the house I leave alone, but I had to capture this brown one. Looks like a silverish/white stripe on the back with a chevron at the bottom and is about an inch long. Can anyone ID it?

It looks like a Wolf Spider, we get these occassionally. They carry their young on their bodies so if you crush them, the babies will scatter like something out of a sci-fi movie!

Re: Spider Lovers...who's this guy?

Could be a wolf spider, also known as a wolf tarantula, most of the ones I have come across are tan-ish or brown. Probably not life threatening but the markings on it's back make me think not a wolf spider. Maybe someone else can be of more assistance.

I brought it down to the office to see if anyone there could identify it. After I found out myself, I took it out and put it in a flower bed at a bank plaza. Maybe it will join an office worker for lunch tomorrow.

Did you wrap it in plastic? How did it not suffocate?

It was inside a gallon sized Ziploc bag. I'm honestly surprised it was still alive 12 hours later. I guess the Ziploc bags are not as airtight as Dow would want you to believe.

Re: Spider Lovers...who's this guy?

Spiders (as most arthropods) consume oxygen at a very slow rate. If they're not moving, they're consuming almost none at all. It wouldn't surprise me if it could survive a week inside a ZipLoc bag.

If you ever buy a tarantula via DHL overnight service, if it's small enough, it'll come in a pill bottle but even then they usually would poke a few holes in the bottle (very very tiny ones!) and then a few in the shipping box itself. It's an interesting way to obtain pets via the internet..
