I always get one these green plastic things with my Sushi that I buy at the supermarket. What is its purpose?

It's to keep your wasabi under control. Without the fake green grass it would invade your sushi and ginger slices. Wasabi fears plastic grass.

Ah yes, because as we all know, Sushi is grown in the finest grassy fields of Japan. And what better way to present the sushi, then surrounded in it's own 'natural' habitat.
