'ERROR...GATEWAY TIMEOUT', what is it and why does it happen?

Lately i've been getting a lot of 'error gateway timeout' messages when trying to use my Netflix account and it's really getting under my skin.

As someone who doesn't know much about computers, i'm competant with them but that's about it, can someone please explain to me what this message means and what I might be able to do to stop them?

Found this:

Quote:
Error Message:
504 – Gateway Timeout

Translation:
A server (not always a Web server) is working as a gateway to fulfill your browser’s request. However, the gateway server did not receive a timely response from an upstream server working on your request. This typically means that the gateway server is not communicating properly with up-stream servers.

Solution:
There is slow IP communication problems between the remote gateway and its upstream servers. There is little you can do except try the site again later or contact the Webmaster about the problem.

....whenever you receive an error message that you don't understand (or see a new process in your process tree that you don't recognize) Google it, there are countless sites out there that have info on problems such as these.

Ah, thanks a bunch, Kevin. It doesn't solve the problem but I tend to feel better about something when I know what it is and why it's happening lol.

Basically Netflix isn't communicating very well with your server...I used to get this all the time with Netflix but here lately the outrageous lag (especially when I would update my queue...lord that was a painful process that slowed every window/tab in my browser down) has gone away, I was hoping that it was because Netflix upgraded their server or fixed a software problem....I guess not.

Netflix is very slow but overall it's okay, just the occasional error message, it seems to happen when I try to do a search.

Your experience reminds me of a problem I sometimes have with the IMDB, when I go there not all of the page features will load properly and i'll see 'cannot load requested page' errors which I can usually rectify by reloading the page, but then, and this is where it get's wierd, when I close out IMDB this error happens to every website I try to go to and refreshing doesn't help, almost as if the IMDB has imbedded this problem into my browser for that particular session, I have to log off the net and log back on to get rid of it.

Subsequently i've learned to make the IMDB my very last stop when i'm online.

Now that IS odd....do you let IMDB set cookies? I don't and I have never had that particular problem with IMDB...Oh, there are problems with that site galore without something new being added into the mix.

What browser & server do you use BTW, Firefox & Charter Broadband for me.

Psst....hey, Hammer...(looks around)...I've been SUBSCRIBED:...how about you?

Well, the problem doesn't happen all the time, i'd say about 2 out of the five times i'll go there it'll happen, it's okay most of the time.

I'm on AOL with dial-up at the moment, looking into getting Verizon DSL and now would be the time because they have a deal going on, it's like $15.00 for the first year I think.

Ah, dial-up and AOL is a deadly combo....trust me, once you get broadband you'll NEVER go back to dial-up man....I couldn't.
