I need glasses!

what do you guys wear, how did you select them?

I've been told that I have a wide face at the temples, and need a somewhat wide frame. Suggestions?

Thanks!!

Re: I need glasses!

I was about 40 when I needed glasses. I usually use Lenscrafters because of the quick turn around. They usually have coupons available in Sunday newspaper inserts and mailings.

As for looks, try on different frames in the store. If you have a decent salesperson, they should be able to provide some advice on what looks best.

BTW, with Lenscrafters, they guarantee satisfaction. If they didn't get the prescription right or the doctor changes the prescription because you didn't like it, they will redo at no charge. There's probably a time limit on this, but not sure what it is.

BTW, expect not to be totally happy when first trying out the lenses, you have to get used to them. I also find I prefer the progressives, which are basically bifocals without the visible differences in the grinding of the lenses. Bifocals hurt my eyes. Of course progressives cost more.

Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a wornout coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another.--Irving Townsend

Re: I need glasses!

One thing to consider when getting glasses is how active you are (mountain climber or couch potato) as some glasses are made to stay on better if you are very active verses if you are less active. Another is if you need them all the time or just for reading or just when you are driving.

If they are glasses to be worn all the time it will certainly take some getting used to and a good idea, though it can make it more expensive, is to get the lightest frame and lenses possible so that it's not as much a bother.

Pearle Vision's website allows you to uplaod a face shot of yourself so you can "try on" all their virtual glasses to see what you may look like.

I'll definitely go w/ a woman. great idea!

couldn't stand contacts - I can't even go near my own eyes w/o wincing.

Do transitions really do the same job as sunglasses? do they get dark enough reliably and consistently? or would you recommend buying a seperate pair of sunglasses?

much difference between the designer brands and the Luxottica brands, or even no names, other than price?

And did you guys go for the full tinting package? anti glare, anti scratch, etc?

Re: I need glasses!

One thing I do when I get a new prescription for my glasses is I wait until I wake up in the morning before wearing them. I find the transition a lot easier then taking off the old ones and putting on the new ones right away. I wear rimless glasses with progressive lenses. It took awhile to used to the progressives but I like them.

Re: I need glasses!

Here's my story: I've been wearing glasses for 20+ years. I get new frames every few years and I've NEVER liked any of my frames, until recently...

Everytime I get new glasses, I also get a 2nd pair of prescription sunglasses. I'd always go a little conservative on the regular glasses and a little more sporty on the sunglass frames.

About 4 years ago, they had these really cool looking Nike sunglass frames that are super flexible (i.e. Nike Flexon)! Well, I LOVED my sunglasses. I loved them so much that when I updated my prescription, I wanted to change my regular frames to the Nike sunglass frames. I was a little hesitant because these frames are frameless underneath the lenses (i.e. the metal only goes over the top of the lenses), but the salesman said they would work just fine as regular glasses.

This is the first time in YEARS that I've ever liked my regular glass frames. I never thought about using sunglass frames (or what they typically use for sunglasses) as my regular frames, but that did the trick!

Definitely see if you can find the Nike prescription lenses. They rock!
