Mapquest and Google updating..
Has anybody ever contacted MQ and/or Google Maps to have them update their mapping database?
There is a road in the catskills region in NY that seems Google and Mapquest both report as the way to get to Hunter, NY, which is a popular skiing destination for southern NYrs. For some reason, if you plug in Hunter, NY and have it give directions from points south (via the NYS Thruway aka I-87), it tells you to take the NYS Thruway north to exit 20 and then up what is known as Platte Clove Road (aka Rt 16). However, this is a windy narrow and follows Platte Clove which is a very very steep ravine that becomes an alluvial fan (a geology term) in the town of Palenville, NY. It's also NOT maintained between Nov 15th to Apr 15, which is somewhat historically, ski season.
So the average joe who doesn't know how to get there, will be told by mapquest and Google maps to take an unmaintained hilly road that is narrow, steep and just a little guardrail keeps you from plunging a good 100-200ft below into the valley where you will never be heard from again. (there's already a bunch of old cars down there).
Would like to contact both of them to have them somehow stop telling people to take an unmainted road in winter to a popular destination. Anybody have any luck in doing this?
Jay
There are signs there that say unmained and blah blah blah and just recently, NYS put a block over it because they already towed two cars out of ditches there this winter because the idiots don't read the signs that are there..
They fortunately, didn't go over the side, but it could happen and has before.
