Gas burner won't light?

One of the four burners on our gas stove stopped lighting yesterday. In addition, the one behind it lights unevenly (one side stronger than the other). The burner in question sparks fine and I can smell the gas. Anyone know what could be keeping it from lighting?

clogged burner?
consult your stoves manual to see if there's any way to clean it. Could also be water in the mechanism, though, this usually doesn't last.

Thanks for the tip, Jeremy. It's a rental, so we don't have the manual. Once you put me on the trail of a clogged burner, though, I unscrewed them and checked the holes. Sure enough, the ones nearest to the spark were clogged. I grabbed a nail from my toolbox to break the stuff up, screwed them back on, and all four burners are working like a charm again.

Re: Gas burner won't light?

Just had this exact same problem with a 3 yr old g/e gas stove. Turned out to be some type of electronic harness that went to all 4 burners due to the fact that you could no longer get just the single harness!! $250 later and a few trips from ge service (do not use!) it was fixed, almost cheaper to buy an entire new stove...good luck!

Checked the burner/line/igniter for clogs to no avail.

Regards,
Todd

Re: Gas burner won't light?

Two of the burners on my gas stove will no longer light using the electric ignition but I'm too cheap to get it repaired so I just use an electric match to light it up.

Re: Gas burner won't light?

I have an old Magic Chef stove that looks like it had a pilot light at one point, but converted somehow to electric ignition which doesn't work. I say pilot light since I see the small little bumps between the burners which might of houses the little pilot light frame. However, turning the knobs on, I can hear an audible click which does nothing but click. I use a butane lighter to light my stovetop burners. Once one of the burners is lit though, the others go on fine without the lighter..
