know anything about car luggage racks?

I have a 4-door Mazda6. It's like a BMW via Kia, if you're not familiar with it. I find myself sometimes having to carry stuff, like a ladder, which would be more comfortable tied to the roof of the car. Does anyone know how I can put a luggage/ski-type rack on the roof of a Mazda6? What kind of rack could I get? Where do you find this stuff online (I have been searching all morning)? When they put a rack on the roof of a car, don't they make holes in the roof? Does this leak?

Should I go to the dealer, or to a speciality shop to have this done?

Thanks for any help! (And happy Thanksgiving day!)

I also have a Mazda6. The roof rack I have is made by Yakima. Thule is the other big name in roof racks. It attaches to the roof using supports which clamp onto the roof using the door frame. There are custom rubber/silicone pieces, specific to your car model, which attach to the bottom of the supports and contour to the roof of the car. A pair of cross bars attaches to the supports and then you can get various types of mounts/carriers which attach to the cross bars. I have a carrier for my bike and also a large metal basket for carrying luggage. For carrying a ladder you could just tie it to the cross bars. If you go to either the Yakima or Thule websites they should have a "wizard" which will tell you what you need for your car. I ended up buying my rack from REI.

Re: know anything about car luggage racks?

See the above....

To answer your question directly, NO, you do not need to put a hole in your roof.

Two types of racks, gutter mounts and basic roof mounts, the gutter mounts use a metal rail (like a speed skate blade) and hooks that go around the window seal of your door. Not many new cars have gutters anymore. My parent's 1980 Datsun 510 did. Most new cars these days are the standard roof mounts with rubber feet (the fit kit) and the window hook things, as kevin mentions. It sounds like the Mazda6 is like this.

You will notice more wind noise with the crossbars than without and there will be a small fuel MPG hit with it. They are somewhat easy to remove and replace but it's not something you want to do every time. They sell many attachments to it to carry bikes, kayaks, skis, loadboxes or just cargo. In this way it is more flexible than a hitch mount or trunk mounted bike carrier. To carry kayaks, a roof rack or trailer is the only way to go.

Yakima makes round cross sectioned cross bars while thule makes rectangular ones. I prefer Thules but that's just me. Most gear carriers are made to work with either, so long as it's somewhat recent or new.
