Never for art theft, come on now.
While a disgusting idea, and a big loss, the thiefs deserve to pay every cent back but not jail.

Isn't the Dagbladet a tabloid? I wouldn't put too much weight into this.

You can get jail (and should) for stealing anything worth over $2000 (grand larceny) in the US. How can you advocate no jail time for stealing and destroying an irreplaceble masterpiece worth millions?

Just to add to Jeff's comment, paying every cent back is pretty much beside the point for a work of art that cannot be replaced.
That painting would have brought at auction some tens of millions--and even then the painting would still exist. The replacement value is beyond calculation as it can't be replaced.

I don't have a problem with SOME time in jail, but NOT LIFE!
Brent
Make it 20 years with a huge bill when they get out, and thousands of hours of CS.

I say life without parole would be too lenient, if this story turns out to be true. But then, I'm more of a subcriber to the Code of Hammurabi than most people.
