Any Old-School FRPGers Out There?

For those who aren't sure what the letters stand for, that's Fantasy Role-Playing Game.

Wondered if any HTFers are fans or active participants in the older games - first or second edition AD&D, Traveller, Call of Cthulu, etc.

About a year ago, I started playing D&D again - but 1st edition. Using eBay, Amazon and a couple other sites, was able to get all the old books (6) for less than the price of two of the new ones.

I'm not looking to debate editions here - just wondering if anyone else has this as an interest in addition to home theater.

Haven't played in awhile, but when I did it was D&D (1st & 2nd), Rifts, Robotech (all titles), Twilight 2000 [MERC] (great mindless fun), Star Wars and a little MERPS.

Still have all the old books taking up a whole shelf in the storage room. Probably spent a good 2k+ on gaming in my youth.

Some of my friends back in St. Louis that I used to game with still have a 1st ed D&D game going. Since I moved to Georgia I haven't played at all and really haven't played a campaign of any sort since Sophomore year of college (which would be 11-12 years ago, YIKES)

Back in the day I played D&D (original, basic, and Advanced), MERP, Twilight 2000, Waylander, Call of Cthulu, Warhammer FRP, Gamma World, Boot Hill, 007, Traveller, Empire of the Petal Throne, Palladium, Ring World, Vampires, and probably a few others I'm forgetting.

I GM/DM'd and owned significant amounts of D&D, ADD, MERP, and Traveller. But I gave all my MERP stuff away to a good friend who was more into it at the time than I was and I traded off just about all of my other RPG stuff in about 96 for Magic cards. About all I have left are a bunch of old character sheets and maps and my trusty box of dice.

I stated playing when I was in 4th grade. I would say from 5th grade through high school I played countless hours of FRP. Then played with new people in college but some of the gamers didn't make it to 2nd semester and the game fell apart. I played in one or two games after that but it became harder and harder to get sizable groups together.

I still go back to STL several times a year to visit my friends but that isn't enough time to FRP so we usually play board games, card games, Halo, or go to the Casino for poker.

I used to play AD&D, Traveller, also some of the James Bond type RPGs like Top Secret. But it just got a little too weird for me... A lot of my friends were a little too much interested in it . But I enjoyed it when I played.

BTW, I love D&D and AD&D, back when it was hot there in the early 80's. We had tourney at school and stuff. Lots of fun. You don't have to dress up and geek out for it to still be fun. Its a great way to interact with other people, just like any board game or cards.

I played AD&D, Traveller, Gamma World, and Boot Hill. I had most of the AD&D books that were out in the early '80s.

Then, one day I noticed boobs. The end.

Seriously, though, I have lots of fond memories of campaigns. We were hardcore- all nighters Fri and Sat nights, after-school clubs, all of it. It was fun. My mom thought I was possessed by Satan.

I think I gave all my books away. Either that, or they're in my folks' attic. Either way, lost forever.

I have a few editions of Wizardry that I can't get to play on my Athlon XP machine.

Oh yeah, Top Secret, I owned that too.

When I was heavy into Magic in 96-97 there was a group of guys who played live action - rent cabins in the woods, make armor, etc. That was way too weird for me.

In 5th grade one of my friend's Mom's decided D&D was satanic and made him throw his stuff away, even his dice! He was a good son too because he didn't play again until college.

Sorry to make you seem old but D&D is on version 3.5 now (version 1 & 2 were TSR games, version 3 came out after they were bought by WOTC, and Hasbro bought WOTC and unleashed 3.5).

Other fun stuff: The Palladium multiverse, RIFTS, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: and other strangeness, Superheros, et cetera. I liked that all the games had the same rule system.

Sadly, most people are only intrsted in MMORPGs now. Where is the ROLE-playing and social interaction in those?

PS: Check out my sig links for D&D satanic wackiness, and satanic goth wackiness
