Anybody see this last night? Pretty interested cause I never heard about the switching of Earth's magnetic fields (which goes from the southern hemisphere to magnetic north) that is predicted to occur sooner or later (in Earth time)...
I hope it's a 180deg change or our compasses will go wacky. Plus they talk about the period of time when there could be multiple magnetic poles rather than the dipole system we have now but to make a long story short, they are noticing a weakening in the magnetic pull of the earth within the last few centuries and research indicates it may be an indication of a complete change of the magnetic flow in the earth. Our compasses may start to point south rather than north and stuff like that. Solar radiation will not be deflected during the period of reversal causing more cancer deaths although not predicted to be catastrophic but on the order of 100k more deaths due to cancer than normal. On the plus side, they say the aurora borealis (aka the Northern Lights) will be able to be seen around the world rather than predominantly in the northern latitudes.
Neat show, glad I caught it. I hope I don't need new topo maps!
