Need help writing a personal reference letter

I need to write a personal reference letter for a very good friend I've known since high school (about 12 years) but I'm not that good with words and grammar.

I tried to search the web for letter samples but oddly enough, I couldn't find any.

Can anyone point me to any samples or maybe provide me with some?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, it's pretty good Bob. But they're talking about writing letters for a co-worker (job skills, etc).

The letter I need to write is for a personal friend.

"He was a great guy, I liked him."

As a person who sees resumes and cover letters, and has followed up on a resume or two, I throw those right out the window.

Use the templates for the coworkers, and adapt them for your friend. You need to speak to his work ethic, outside of work. Personal projects, volunteer time, family life, etc. If I get a rec from a family friend, I want to know what kind of person they are.

Thanks for the suggestion Justin.

Is there anyone on the net where I can see actual letters or sample letters?

I have an idea on what I want to say, I just don't know how to say it.
