Re: Is My Onkyo '605 Set Up Properly?
As David said, it sounds like you're configured to see/hear everything to the best of each components abilities.
Thank you so much also, Brent!
So I do have the connections right? That is, HDMI OUT from the Blu ray player to the 605's HDMI IN, and then HDMI OUT from the 605 to HDMI IN of my Sony SXRD display?
I haven't seen the Home Theater issue you mentioned yet...must still be in the mail. However, it sounds like they're describing the "Immediate Display" setting...not sure if the 605 has that, but it's in the Miscellaneous/OSD menu on the 805.
Interesting...yes, I just received my issue in the mail...they compare a bunch of higher end receivers from Denon, Onkyo, Sony and Yamaha and analyze their video performance...but I think it was more about analog sources being upscaled through HDMI...
At any rate, I was concerned that the onscreen menu of my 605 was degrading the signal because they said it was doing so in the one they reviewed in Home Theater; again, it was a higher end model than my 605. My 605 does not have that "Immediate Display" menu you mention, I don't believe, but it does have something called an "HDMI MONITOR" in the setup menu, which I have set to "YES"...I originally thought this was so the receiver could pass video through it, but later found out it's actually to control whether or not you want an onscreen menu to appear when you're connected via HDMI...I'm hoping this is something that is not degrading the signal quality of incoming 1080p HDMI signals...
Per the 805's manual, Immediate Display will not generate output over a component or HDMI source signal, but THX still recommends turning it off. To me, the implication is the OSD generator is still firing for HDMI/component sources even though it doesn't overlay on those signals, I can see where it could disturb the video data. It's probably fairly subtle...kind of like players/receivers that have an option to turn off video circuits when listening to audio only. I'm sure some folks can hear a difference, but I'm not one of them.
Again, interesting...I don't have an "immediate display" on my 605, but I'm wondering if 1080p is indeed passing fine from my player through this receiver and out to the display...
Thank you again, Brent.

That's weird; I would think the menu would come over HDMI just as easily, especially with that higher end Onkyo...
