Sun was saying that he didn't die on the island. She's saying he never made it off the plane - that he died in the crash. Very important is the significant look of sympathy Jack gives Sun at the press conference when the picture taken by the fishermen is shown. That should at least give a clue as to the time frame.
The reason for their deception we have yet to discover (as an audience), but I suspect they are (or believe they are) protecting something. We are not supposed to know yet.
