My rears are connected to the rear terminals on the receiver; so I should instead connect them to the side souround? I'm using color coded wires so the wire colors match the receiver input terminals and the speaker terminals - so I assume the polarity is correct.

I rechecked the speaker wire connections - all OK.

I am now able to adjust the sound levels with the rears set at +10DB and the fronts and center set at - 4 DB.

...receiver still shuts down on set up mode, however.
