I am guessing that the Clark/Lex showdown in the fortress next week will set the stage for Lex's departure. This goes back to what I said three or four weeks ago about "Descent" and how I thought that Millar/Gough may have been using it as the preamble to a series (not season) finale.

I wonder if Gough and Millar are just finishing their vision of "Smallville" as a series as though the CW had not extended it again. What comes next will not be "Smallville" as such. It will be someone else's take on the continuation of the Superman saga: post Smallville but pre-Superman. Next year really deserves a new name. It could be a new multi-year arc or a series of random episodes; both have their advantages and disadvantages.
