Yeah, that's pretty much what Rick McCallum has been saying for a few years now. The last I read about it was that there would need to be at least 3000 digital screens in order to make a 3-D release financially feasible.
Another rumor I came across was that Lucas gave up on this, at least for the OT. Because it was of the way the movies where shot in the 70's and 80's, they were coming across problems. Then I read an interview with James Cameron from March of this year and he confirmed that Lucas IS doing SW in the 3-D. So who knows what's going on.
I believe Cameron over the this other rumor, but Lucasfilm really hasn't said anything about it lately. All the talk has been The Clone Wars movie / TV series, the live action SW TV series and Indy 4.
