Audio help

Hello, I have a phillips 50" dlp tv that only has digital audio output, with a pioneer vsx-d409 receiver. I have it setup running thru the digital coax and it's working fine. My question is, i had the same receiver, but with a 50" rca tv that used the red and white audio cables and when i turned the volume up or down on the tv it would do the same thru the receiver. Is this something that can or cannot be done with the digital hookup?
