Interesting. I thought it was pretty clear that as indicated above, his consciousness was travelling back and forth. After each trip, the Desmond of 1998 had memories of 2004,
in 1998, so information travelled to the past. That is time travel.

I don't know: We haven't seen present-Desmond since the whole thing began. All we saw was Past-Des "travelling" back and forth. Every time he leave one body, it becomes unconscious (see above).
Past-Des and Pres-Des were not swapping places. Pres-Desmond has simply vanished since the first incident, and if there was any reason to believe that he came back at the end, then I certainly missed it.
When Sayid asked "Are you OK now?" and Desmond says yes, was that supposed to mean that Present Desmond was back? When did the "return" occur? There certainly was no cue or sign of any sort.
