I remember reading that Zemeckis originally wanted to simultaneously release a PG-13 version and an NC-17 version but was prohibited from doing so by the MPAA. From what you say, it doesn't sound like the Director's Cut would come close to qualifying for an NC-17 or that the silly, Austin Powers-esque nudity obstructions have been removed. Sounds like they've split the difference between the PG-13 and NC-17 versions and settled for an R version. Bummer
