Could someone familiar with the book post that ending here, preferably with spoiler tags?

Spoiler:
It is a superior combination of the theatrical and alternate endings, in that Robert Neville realizes that he, as the last human being, has become a monster of legend to the vampires (not Dark Seekers, not 70's mod plague victims, etc.

) through his actions (both in outright destroying them and using them as test subjects to find a 'cure') as they (the vampires) used to be to us.
Edited to add:
The reason I say that the novella's ending is a combination of the two I Am Legend (film) endings is that Robert Neville has the above realization just before he dies. His death makes the story all the more poignant and tragic. That is why, while I prefer the alternate I Am Legend ending, I cannot totally 'get on board' with it.

I would agree, but unfortunately it makes the third act's shortcomings all the more difficult for me to bear. Alas, two-thirds of a good movie does not a purchase make for me no matter how good a price or reference material it may be.
