Why wouldn't UK stations play US bands? Dreamboat Annie was #36 on the charts in the UK, so it wasn't exactly an obscure album. Magic Man was a top 10 hit in the US.
Are there any Brits of a certain age here who care to comment?

BTW, EMI owns Capitol. And Capitol put out (the reissue of) Dreamboat Annie. Just sayin'. :p
