If you are one to leave your DVD's out of the case and lying around it doesn't matter if they are single or double they are going to get damaged. I don't have a single scratch or fingerprint on any dvd i own whether it be single/duel. It is just an easy and simple process really to keep them that way. When your done viewing, put them back in the case.

Aryn, I take extremely good care of my disks. The problem is that many of us have friends or family to whom we like to lend our disks to. Unfortunately friends/family are not always quite as careful as we would like them to be. While my single sided disks are robust enough to lend out, I am too worried to lend my double-sided ones.

Also, unfortunately for me, I have had problems with double-sided disks (not just Universal ones). Not every set I have brought, but enough so that I now like to avoid them as much as I can. I live in Australia but buy most of my TV-DVDs from the US. There is nothing so upsetting as receiving an eagerly awaited show only to discover that it will not play properly - Pretender, Leave it to Beaver, Adam-12, etc. It is always the double-disks shows I have problems with.

While Amazon is usually ok about sending me a replacement, it nearly always costs me $$$. Sometimes they want me to return the original. Since postage between the US and Australia can often cost more than the items themselves, this can be very expensive with no guarantee that the replacement will be trouble-free. (N.B. I know that US customers can return faulty items postage cost free, but unfortunately non-US customers have to pay. While in theory the postage we pay will be refunded, this usually takes several chase-ups before the refund is forth coming).

Other times they will tell me that they do not require me to send the original back as the "costs are prohibitive", then several months later I'll get a threatening letter saying they haven't received the originals and if they don't receive them by xx day they will charge me for the replacements!

Let's just say that the stress I have gone through trying to get replacements for faulty double-sided disks is not something I want repeated.

I haven't purchased "Land of the Giants" (another show I love) because the disks were double-sided and I won't buy CHiPs S2.

I wish that the studios would stop being so cheap (as others have pointed out, we sure don't see the savings) and stop using double sided disks!

The only time I now risk buying double-sided disks is if the show is under $20.00.

Helen
